Dermal Fillers Offer an Immediate Solution to Fine Lines, Wrinkles, Folds, Scars and Reshaping Your
As we age the face skin loses volume which can make the face look hollow. To restore a more youthful look, dermal fillers can be injected into the face to refill the areas that have volume loss, can treat wrinkles, lines and plump up lips. Dermal Fillers are also used for the “parenthesis” around your mouth (nasolabial folds) and lines that form at the corners of your lips and work their way down to your chin (marionette lines). BUT WAIT … THERE’S MORE. What about those dark hollows under your eyes? Dermal Fillers work great in that area too!
FDA approved dermal fillers have been around since about the early 1980’s. At that time they consisted of purified bovine (“relating to or affecting cattle”) collagen: Since then, newer versions of dermal fillers were developed, composing of hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found in the skin and is chemically modified by the manufacturers. This is done to increase its gel-like firmness as well as longevity to give a longer lasting fullness where injected. Although some of the active ingredients of the fillers may vary, the main difference between most of the products on the market today is in how long the effects last. Some of the active compounds in different products have a firmer consistency which is beneficial in deeper facial lines and will hold up under repetitive facial movements. Others are much softer and used in more superficial lines and lip areas. In addition to hyaluronic acid, current filler products on the market may be comprised of hydroxyapatite (i.e. Radiesse) or polymethylmethacrylate beads (i.e. Bellafill) which all have varying lengths of effect.
Dermal Fillers Are A Cornerstone of Facial Rejuvenation
At Sylvana Med Spa we recommend dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, Restylane Silk, Radiesse and Voluma to restore volume to the cheeks, fill in deep folds and plump up lips. Results are immediate and fillers are where we often begin for a complete facial rejuvenation. Because of their effectiveness in adding fullness to these areas, treatment with Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse and/or Voluma are among the most popular and most often treatments we provide.
What Are the Differences Among Dermal Fillers?
All dermal fillers restore volume and fullness. Each one is slightly different and are often layered to achieve an extremely natural-looking youthful appearance.
Juvederm – a “next-generation” FDA-approved dermal filler, is a smooth consistency gel made of hyaluronic acid – a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. Juvederm is also the first that has demonstrated its safety and effectiveness in with darker skin tones. Juvederm is ideal for softening the deep line that runs from the edge of your nose to the end of your lip.
Voluma - Juvederm™ Voluma™ is the latest of the Juvederm range of hyaluronic acid fillers specifically designed to restore volume in areas of volume loss. Common areas include the cheeks, cheekbones, and chin. Additionally, due to its versatility it is also suitable for adding definition to the jaw line.
Restylane – a very fluid dermal filler that is easy to maneuver in soft tissue areas like under the eyes. It is also the only filler that’s FDA-approved for use around the lips.
Restylane Silk - is perfect is for more shallow areas and fine lines.
Radiesse – differs from the other dermal fillers as it is a calcium-based product. It has a higher viscosity making it ideal for sub-dermal replacement and building up your cheeks.

How Long Does the Treatment Take?
The injection process usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes depending on how many areas are being treated. The results are immediate. There is virtually no recuperation time, which our clients love. Most people resume their normal activities immediately following the treatment. We suggest that you avoid sleeping on your face for the first nights after having fillers in your cheeks.
Are There Side Effects?
The most common side effects include temporary injection site reactions such as redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching and discoloration. Most side effects are mild or moderate and last no longer than a week.
How Long Do The Results Last?
Results can last for up to a year or longer. The filler safely disappears over time so treatments are usually recommended every six to nine months. Each of these fillers has a different longevity which we will discuss with you during your Complimentary Consultation.
It is important to understand that all of the facial fillers will eventually be degraded by the body and the effects diminish over time.
What Else Can Dermal Fillers Be Used For?
Dermal fillers are a great way to plump up lips that are naturally thin or have lost volume over time. When we are smoothing and plumping up smoker’s lines and thin lips we often use dermal fillers in conjunction with Botox. We also use them in the balls of feet, on hands and in the tear channel under eyes.
